Brittany Babb, an eighth grader at First Colony Middle School, will receive the Humanitarian Service Award from Acting Houston Police Chief C. McClelland on March 3, 2010. The ceremony will take place at the Police Academy, located at 17000 Aldine-Westfield . The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
Brittaney will be receiving the award, along with other volunteers, for their efforts to enhance the quality of life for and elderly, disabled couple, living in Acres Homes.
Woodrow Ward, 91, and his wife 84-old-year wife, Mavis, have lived in the same home for a half-century. Following Hurricane Ike, their home was damaged to the point that they could no longer exit their front door. They came to the attention of HPD’s Blue Crew, when Mrs. Ward fell down the back stairs, while going to check the mail.
As a result of a major volunteer effort, a wheelchair ramp & front porch were built, the house was cleaned & painted, landscaping was added and the spirits of Mr. & Mrs. Ward were lifted immensely. In addition to providing physical labor, Brittaney spent some time bonding with Mr. Ward, who appreciated her interest in his “old stories” of how things used to be.
