On July 13, 2010, Alfredo Zeno was sentenced by 240th District Court Judge Thomas R. Culver, III, to 15 years in prison on each of three counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child. The 56 year-old Rosenberg man plead guilty to sexually abusing a child over a period of time in 2005, said Suzy Morton, Chief of the District Attorney‘s Child Abuse Division.
According to evidence presented, Zeno had sexually abused the young daughter of his girlfriend in Rosenberg in 2005. When the relationship ended between Zeno and the child’s mother, the woman and her children moved to California. “In February 2009, the child, who was then 10 years old, disclosed to her grandmother that she had been abused by the defendant in Texas. At the time of the abuse, the child was five to six years old,” said Morton.
Evidence presented by Assistant District Attorney Mark LaForge and Morton revealed that the child’s grandmother contacted the Rosenberg Police Department where Detective Kevin Raines immediately began investigating the case. The investigation was a combined effort between Rosenberg police and California law enforcement. Ultimately, Zeno admitted to some of the allegations during his interviews with Detective Raines. A warrant was obtained and Zeno was arrested.
Assistant District Attorney Mark LaForge says, “The child’s outcry of sexual abuse, years after it had occurred, was ultimately confirmed by the defendant’s own admissions to the crimes after a thorough investigation by the Rosenberg Police Department. We are very proud of the little girl in this case for telling what happened to her. She is a very strong and a very smart young lady.”
“Unfortunately, children who have been victimized often times do not tell for years,” added LaForge. “We are thankful we had the opportunity to obtain justice in this case. It is never too late to report a crime against a child.”
As of September 1, 2007, there is no longer a statute of limitations in Texas for sex offenses committed against children – meaning there is no deadline for any victim of child abuse to report the crime.
