Police were notified Friday when Jennifer Gilbert showed up at a Methodist Hospital Sugar Land with a critically injured week old baby suffering from stab wounds. Sugar Land Police spokesman Doug Adolph said the mother, her two-year-old daughter, her husband Anthony Scott Gilbert and their week old son were all in their family apartment at the Gables Apartments, 15700 Lexington Blvd. when Gilbert’s wife awoke to him trying to smother her. She was unable to get to her children and escape for several hours as he held them hostage.
According to reports the baby had already been stabbed when Gilbert tried to smother his wife. The two year old was unharmed. Sugar Land spokesman Doug Adolph said the mother and her two children eventually escaped and she met with police at the hospital. At press time the baby boy was in critical but stable condition. He was Life Flighted by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Medical Center
Prior to that, Rosenberg police announced they were investigating accusations of an inappropriate teacher/student relationship at
Lamar Consolidated’s BF Terry High School between Gilbert and a female student. This was Gilbert’s first year to teach English at Terry.
According to police Gilbert was placed on administrative leave by LCISD as the allegations of an inappropriate teacher/student relationship involving he and a sixteen year old female were investigated. Police can only speculate on what triggered Gilbert’s actions during the overnight hours of Thursday into Friday.
Rosenberg’s announcement was on the heels of a SWAT situation that unfolded at Gilbert’s home leaving he and his week old son hospitalized with life threatening knife wounds.
After notification of the nightmare the family experienced at their apartment, Sugar Land police went to contact Gilbert at his residence; that resulted in a several hours long SWAT standoff. Eventually Gilbert was removed from the apartment suffering from serious self-inflicted stab wounds. He was airlifted to Memorial Hermann in Houston where he remains in ICU.
When Gilbert is released from the hospital he will be taken to the Fort Bend County jail on charges of attempted capital murder for the injuries to his son. Charges of attempted murder and unlawful restraint are also expected to be filed. Gilbert also faces the initial charge that brought him to the attention of law enforcement in the first place; sexual assault of a child stemming from the allegations from Terry High School.
