Richmond hosts dedication ceremony for historic cemetery

By Cheryl Skinner

The city of Richmond is proud of its historical status and one of the many venues in the city that tops the historical locations is the Morton Cemetery. On Friday, officials and citizens will pay homage to this historical location by officially dedicated a newly built chapel, which is located in the cemetery.

The ceremony is scheduled for 9 AM on Friday, November 7 with a reception and light refreshments to follow.

Morton Cemetery was established in 1825 and is one of the most historical cemeteries in the entire state.

Mirabeau Lamar, the second President of the Republic of Texas is buried there along with Jane Long who is called the “Mother of Texas,” scores of Confederate veterans, a Texas Ranger and the oldest Masonic monument in Texas. The old headstones are historical and elaborate. Many visitors come to Richmond to view the cemetery yearly.

The public is welcome to attend the ceremony. The cemetery is located at the intersection of North Second Street and Commerce in Richmond.
