Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

And it did ... so much so that Fort Bend County basically shut down on Friday.

Schools, businesses and even government employees cancelled planned events and services throughout the day as the snow flurries intensified and threats of a deep evening freeze increased.

Being a native Texan, I can remember the three or four snow events in my childhood. Since snow is a rare thing here in Texas, the few times we experience this event stick out in our mind.

Funny how, as a child, the sight of the soft white snowflakes created delight and wonder. As an adult, the initial reaction is much the same. Then we shift gears and worry about getting the kids from school and making it home from work under slippery, icy road conditions.

Frankly, I’d rather be a kid. I don’t want to worry about driving in the snow and ice, nor do I want to care if the pipes are securely wrapped. I want to be able to run in the flurries and scoop the snow into a tiny snowman or catch it for snow ice cream.

The wonder of being a child becomes a reality at times like these and all across the county sounds of gleeful laughter and looks of awe made the day even more special.

Luckily here in Texas, for the most part, the snow doesn’t cause long-term problems and by the next day it simply becomes one of those special memories.

I hope everyone had at least one tiny moment that allowed the child inside to surface, the eyes to twinkle, and the laughter to escape.
