Local government offices, schools will be closed on Good Friday

Easter holiday name change not likely

By Elsa Maxey

As is typically the case out here in Fort Bend County, city and county offices and schools will be closed on Good Friday, which this year falls on April 22, and it’s on the same day as Earth Day.

Around the nation, rumblings about changing the holiday name from Good Friday to “Spring Holiday” are circulating about resisting it as a form of cultural Marxism. But the change, some suggest, will reflect a community’s diversity and honor the separation between church and state. Others, however, say that the more diverse and multicultural the nation’s communities become, the less diverse they are allowed to be in the name of accommodating other cultures.

“Spring Holiday” was tried in at least one Iowa community last year at around this time, and it did not turn out to be popular. A city official announced it would be changing it on its city calendar. Local calendars here, by the way, all seem to have a Good Friday entry for this Friday. But in Davenport, Iowa, it is reported that the city made the change following the advice of a Civil Rights Commission about the church/state separation. After being deluged with calls from upset citizens, the decision to do it was retracted and the name change was said to be an error.

The removal of Christmas holidays on many calendars is already in place and some call this a war on Christmas. However, Christmas Day has remained on many calendars. For now, it does not seem likely that Good Friday, a Christian religious holiday observed right before Easter Sunday, will gain much popularity for its removal. Reportedly, union workers in Iowa were opposed to the name change because it was thought they would no longer have the day off.
