Wednesday, May 4, is the first day for Stafford students can begin to read for a world record in the the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge! The top 20 schools submitting the most minutes will be included in the 2012 Scholastic Book of World Records. All students should be encouraged to participate by signing up at www.scholastic.com/summer. Students under the age of 13 will need to have their parent’s permission to participate.
Below are the step-by-step instructions:
· Go to www.scholastic.com/summer.
· Under the “Kids” tab click on “Get Started.”
· Click on “Join Now” and follow the on screen instructions to sign up.
· Each student will be given a Screen name and Password where they will be able to go in and log their minutes reading over the summer.
SMSD’s District Librarian, Jacqueline Mamou, estimates that if all 3,000+ SMSD students read a minimum of 30 minutes a day for 17 weeks then over 10 million minutes will be logged by the end of the summer which should easily put Stafford in the top 20 in the nation! The summer reading challenge is also a way to reduce the likelihood that students will lose important reading and learning skills over the summer months.
