A letter from SMSD’s interim superintendent
As many of you know, the Stafford City Council called a bond election for SMSD in March of 2011. The total amount of the package is $49.9 million and is presented to voters in four propositions. Early voting was May 2 – 10, 2011 at both SMSD and Stafford City Hall. The final opportunity for Stafford registered voters to extend their vote is this Saturday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm at Stafford City Hall. Detailed information concerning the bond election has been distributed at numerous school activities, and H.D. Chambers presented the information at two town hall meetings, one of which was videotaped for broadcasting on the Stafford Municipal Education Television (SMETV) located on Comcast cable channel 16. Information in both English and Spanish is also available at the district website, HYPERLINK “http://www.staffordmsd.org” www.staffordmsd.org linked on the 2011 Bond Election page.
In addition to the bond election, the SMSD Board of Trustees called an election for May 14, 2011 to elect two trustees for regular three-year terms. Candidates are current trustees, Cindy Hoelscher and Rodney Butler, and newcomer, Auturo Jackson. The ballot prepared by Fort Bend County Elections in English and Spanish is included with this letter and voting directions in Vietnamese will be provided at the polls.
If you have not already exercised your right to vote, I encourage you to schedule time this Saturday to do so. Voting is the foundation of our democratic government and is a right and a privilege that many governments across the world still do not extend to their citizens. Even now, our military is assisting other nations to secure this right. We must not take it for granted.
On another topic, the last official school day for SMSD students is Thursday, June 2, 2011, which will be a half-day schedule for all SMSD students. Please check with your child’s campus for any details regarding Thursday’s release times and bus schedules.
On that same date, Stafford High School Graduation will begin at 7:00 pm at Sugar Creek Baptist Church, located at 13333 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, Texas. This graduation celebration is attended by parents, extended family and the community. All those in attendance will be proud to hear the accomplishments of our graduates.
Parking at our Stafford High School Graduation is limited, even though the facility will accommodate 3,000 attendees. In addition, guests at graduation will not be seated in the sanctuary after 6:50 p.m. Seating after that time will only be available in an overflow area outside the sanctuary where closed-circuit tv will allow all guests to view the ceremonies.
Because of limited parking, five SMSD shuttle buses will begin transporting guests at 5:45 pm from the Stafford High School back parking lot, and two activity buses will also transport guests from the Sugar Creek Baptist Youth LYF Center located on the opposite side of the Southwest Freeway from the church. No buses will be available from the Gerland’s grocery store parking area. If you are attending graduation, I encourage you to arrive early and take advantage of the shuttle services.
Once again, thank you for being an SMSD Key Communicator and please share this information with those individuals and groups within your circle of influence.
Betty Baitland, Ed.D.
