New Aquatics Practice Facility to Promote Expansion of Swim Programs in Fort Fort Bend ISD recently held an Open House to welcome visitors to its new Aquatics Practice Facility, located at 16701 Bissonnet at FM 1464 near the Hodges Bend Transportation Center. Similar in size to FBISD’s Don Cook Natatorium, the new facility houses a 980,000-gallon pool that will initially be used by four schools (Austin, Bush, Kempner and Travis High Schools) for practice sessions and a limited number of meets, and for districtwide swim meets, beginning in October 2011.

“The new Aquatics Facility will help alleviate overcrowding at the Don Cook Natatorium and allow for the expansion of swimming and diving programs in an area of our district that can benefit from this type of facility,” said Mike Duswalt, FBISD Aquatics Manager. “We hope that members of the community will take advantage of the new facility and the various swim lesson opportunities that will become available to them.”

A unique feature of the state-of-the-art Aquatics Practice Facility is that it has an open-air design that uses natural and mechanical systems for cooling, allowing for a substantial savings in operational costs for the District. The location of the new facility will also allow for shorter commutes for schools in the area, thus providing savings in transportation costs.
