Fort Bend ISD students have a great showing at FotoFence 2011
Five Fort Bend ISD schools participated in the 2011 FotoFest Literacy through Photography (LTP) project. They were among 28 Houston area schools to take part in the year-end event, which celebrates the improved writing and communication skills of students through the use of photography and visual imagery. Participating FBISD schools included Kempner High School, Schiff Elementary School, and Dulles, Missouri City, and Sugar Land Middle Schools.
“This was the second year that we offered the Literacy through Photography program to our English Language Learners,” said Nesren El Baz, English as a Second Language teacher at Sugar Land Middle School. “The students had fun borrowing the school’s cameras to take photos of their family members and record special events. They were eager to write and share their special moments with their classmates and have their posters featured in this year’s FotoFence exhibit.”
As a result of having their work on exhibit at FotoFence 2011, four FBISD students were among only seven students to have their projects purchased by FotoFence. Selected entries represented the goals of the LTP project, were visually appealing, represented a successful pilot project, and contained outstanding writing.
FBISD students to have artwork purchased were: Rabia Fatima of Kempner High School, Julie Li of Dulles Middle School, Jack Mathew of Schiff Elementary School, and Tran Tran of Sugar Land Middle School. The elementary and middle school students each received $25 for their posters and the high school students received $50.
Additionally, Harshita Shetye of Dulles Middle School was one of the featured readers during the FotoFence event.
