Ethics commission fines State Rep. Ron Reynolds

Payment plan in place

Right after being named Freshman of the Year of the largest legislative freshman class this June, District 27 State Rep. Ron Reynolds has been providing explanations about some outstanding financials, which have in part been due to do his going through a family crisis that turned into a loss of life, his mother’s.

Rep. Ron Reynolds told the “Star” he takes full responsibility for being subjected to a fine from the Texas Ethics Commission for failing to timely submit documents and submit a personal financial disclosure statement. There were other incidents, too.

The fines relate to the legislator’s 2008 campaign, which he reports amounted to $10,200. Rep. Reynolds said that earlier this year, he began making payments to cover the fines and penalties owed, and his intentions are for them to be fully paid by October.

He also said there have been misconstrued reports about his private business affairs. Those included an IRS lien from a previous business he owned no longer in operation, and he’s working on having that lien removed since the taxes owed have already been paid. There was also a tax forfeiture shown by the Texas Secretary of State, the result of an old business which is also no longer in existence, he said. “I continue to work with my accountant and tax attorney to make sure that all appropriate agencies’ records properly reflect the facts.”

Rep. Reynolds said he has taken necessary steps to file required paperwork and said he owns his responsibilities for this failure, also pointing out the concurrent challenging times when his mother suffered from a massive stroke/brain aneurysm in 2008, leaving her in a vegetative state until her death this April. “I deeply regret not staying on top of my campaign paperwork,” he said that would not again be repeated.
