Citizens Day set for September 19 at Ft. Bend Co. Fair

Shown are seniors at 2010 Seniors Day.

The diamond anniversary of the Fort Bend County Fair is fast approaching and the Senior Citizens Day committee is busy preparing for the annual Senior Citizens Day event. This year’s event will be held again in Building “C” at the Fort Bend County Fair on Monday September 19, 2011.  This year we will return to the traditional stew as the meal. “Last year attendees were treated to a vast array of entertainment along with the meal.” said Ron Castillo, Co-Chairman. “Senior Citizen’s Day is designated for seniors, age 55 and up only, to enjoy a special day in their honor.”

Long Time “Voice of The Senior Citizens Day Event” Mr. Bud Smith will again serve as master of ceremony for this event.  “Bud has become an icon at the Fort Bend County Fair.  He lends his voice to numerous events at the fair and is loved by all” stated Fair Manager, Susan Sillavan.

This popular event draws about 1,500 people annually and this year promises to be no exception. Activities begin at 9 AM Monday, September 19th in Building C.  The doors open at 8 AM. Seating is available on a first come, first serve basis.  “Every year we enjoy the company of the senior citizens of the Fort Bend County area” said Jennifer Williams, Co-Director in Charge of the committee.   “We as volunteers learn from the seniors we serve. I know many individuals who eagerly anticipate this day each year and when they arrive it is like a family reunion to them.”

According to the first Director in Charge of Senior Citizen’s Day, Leroy Parthum, “The first senior citizen’s day event was held in 1988 under the pavilion located next to the arena.  We had about 900 people attend that day and it was raining hard.”  The event later moved into the arena a few years later as it out grew the pavilion.  In 2008, twenty years after the first Senior Citizen’s Day the event was moved into the comfort of air conditioning in Building C.  The seniors no longer have to worry about the Texas heat.

The 2011 Committee chairpersons Ron Castillo, Robin Eversole and Brandy Leonhardt encourage volunteers, sponsors and vendors for the one day event to contact the Fair Office at 281-342-6171 or visit  HYPERLINK “http://www.fbcfa.orgwww.fbcfa.org for information.  A committee meeting will be held on Monday August 15, at 6:30 PM in Building “C” at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds. Civic organizers and volunteers are encouraged to attend this meeting by sending a representative who can coordinate volunteer needs with the committee.”
