SMSD … Did you know…

Local veterans representing the Army, Air Force, Marines, and Navy attended a ceremony in their honor today at Stafford High School.  Hosted by the Stafford High School Army JROTC, the ceremony included the recognition of Veterans serving in WW II, Korean War, Vietnam, Gulf War, and Afghanistan War.  The Color Guard and Honor Guard raised the flag and the National Anthem was sung by the Stafford Varsity Choir.  A lone trumpeter played Taps and middle and high school students read poetry and patriotic essays.  The event culminated with a luncheon in the middle school foods lab.  Thank you Veterans for your Service!

Seventy Robotic Teams from throughout the area and State will compete tomorrow in the Vex Robotics competition at Stafford High School!  Opening Ceremonies begin at 9 am and completion will continue through 5 pm.  The FREE event is open to the public! Stafford High School students will be competing to advance to national competitions in Orlando, Florida.  Go Spartans!

Mr. and Miss Stafford Middle School will be crowned tomorrow evening in a competition that involves fundraising for various Student Council projects.  The candidates competing for the coveted crown must: maintain a 2.5 minimum grade point average; exemplify high moral character; compete in talent, interview, casual wear, scholastic achievement, and on-stage questions; and earn points through fundraising efforts.  The pageant begins at 6:00 pm and all candidates will be formally presented at the Coronation which is the culminating event for the evening.  Go Spartans!

Last weekend 67 Stafford Middle School Band students competed for seats in three All-Region Bands and 35 earned the honor and 3 will serve as alternates!  The Association of Texas Small Schools Band, Region 13 contest included 460 students from area school districts.  This is a huge accomplishment for the young musicians and their band directors are all very proud of them.  Go Spartans!

The Stafford High School Cross-Country Varsity Boy’s Team finished 6th out of the top 24 teams in the region!  Two athletes, Tesfamariam Tesfay and Amanuel Tesfay finished in the top 10 out of 171 runners and qualified for the State UIL Competition.  Both young men will compete this weekend, Saturday, November 12th at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock, TX.  Go Spartans!

Stafford students in grades K-6 will be participating in an exciting program that encourages reading for fun.  The free Read to Succeed program from Six Flags® and Discovery Education provides every student who completes six hours of recreational reading before February 24, 2011, a free admission ticket valid at participating Six Flags theme parks. Reading logs in English and Spanish have been sent to teachers from District Librarian Jackie Mamou.  Students can read books, magazines, newspapers, or comic books, or parents can read to their child, or the child can read to them.  Go Spartans!

Next week, Stafford Elementary School is observing “College and Career Awareness” and “National Bully Prevention”.  In preparation, all 4th grade students toured the University of Houston campus this week.  Students will decorate the school with pennants touting their individual career and college interests.  Students will also communicate an anti-bullying message through classroom videos, morning announcements, anti-bully raps, and skits.  For more information on preventing bullying, visit the school’s web-page at http://classroom.stafford.msd.esc4.net/webs/elementary/.  Go Spartans!

The Stafford Angel Tree program is gathering names of participants and the deadline to submit information is this Monday – November 14th.  The form is attached and completed information needs to be emailed to program coordinator, Gloria Medrano, at volunteer@stafford.msd.esc4.net or Terry Loudenburg at tloudenburg@stafford.msd.esc4.net.

Stafford High School Youth-in-Philanthropy (YIP) students are hosting a Toy Drive in conjunction with the county-wide effort that will culminate on Saturday, December 3, 2011, in Sugar Land Town Square.  A flyer is attached and anyone interested in supporting this effort can contact YIP sponsor, Tammy Myers at tmyers@stafford.msd.esc4.net.

Today, Quest and SAEC teachers were treated to a pre-holiday luncheon that was enjoyed by many!  Hosted by Dr. Jon Gray and Stella Hinojosa, the luncheon spread included a Texas holiday favorite – bar-b-que!
