Stafford MSD holds first board meeting for 2012
By Karen Daniels
The first meeting of the year for Stafford Municipal Board Meeting was held on January 9. The meeting began by recognizing both past and present board members to acknowledge their contribution to the school district. After the board returned from a closed session and several FFA Leadership Contest winners were announced, everyone was treated to a spectacular presentation on the Mars Exploration Mission. Stafford’s district librarian, Jackie Mamou, had the honor of being one of 40 librarians selected nationwide to visit the Kennedy Space Center and participate in the “Countdown to Curiosity Workshop” during the week of Thanksgiving. In addition to having a front row seat for the launch of the Mars Science Laboratory, (which incidentally will land sometime between August and September of 2012) Ms. Mamou met with NASA scientists and engineers involved with the mission and received related resources and materials to use in Stafford’s library program.
The progress of the new Field House scheduled to open by next year’s football season was discussed. On the day of the board meeting, Stafford, and the outlying areas received a considerable amount of rainfall. The board was assured by Jimmy Webster that the water had been extracted and minimal damage was sustained to the new field house.
Superintendant Lawrence Hindt announced to the board that he had just received news by the Touch Down Club of Houston that Stafford MSD is a Sportsmanship Finalist for the Top 3 Division. This award is judged by the referees who call the football games based on the actions of the coaches during their games, actions of the teams, actions of the fan base, number of personal fouls, and respect for the American flag. The announcement will be made at the club’s annual meeting, January 25, 2012.
A detailed report was given by Marva Raspberry updating the board on the (STAAR) State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness concerning the new graduation requirements. This program replaces TAKS beginning with the 2011-2012 Freshman class and is a more rigorous assessment program to provide a new accountability system and to better prepare students for college and career placement.
From this point on the meeting progressed rapidly when it was mentioned that the LSU v. Alabama game had ten minutes left in the first half. Meeting was adjourned at 8:30.
