Brazos Bend State Park conducts prescribed burns

Texas Park and Wildlife Department Staff in partnership with the Texas Forest Service conducted prescribed burns on January 11 and 12 to manage and enhance one of Texas’ vanishing natural resources – Tall Grass Coastal Prairies.

Brazos Bend actively manages over 550 acre of this valuable resources and of that 420 acres were burned.  Prairies once covered millions of acres throughout Texas and the US but now only remnants of this once vast ecosystem remain.

Fire is a natural part of the life of a healthy prairie ecosystem.  Fire removes invasive species and recharges the prairie’s native plant species which in turn benefit the animals that call the prairie home.  “A multitude of plant and animal species depend on periodic prairie fires to maintain a healthy population.  Without fire our prairies would become forest of invasive non- native tree species and lost to future generations of Texans, says Park Superintendent Steve Killian.

Prairies are an important part of our cultural heritage as well with many references in the historical record of this habitat as a “sea of grass”. We are tasked with protecting this critical habitat so future generation can experience a bygone era.  Killian added.
