“Plantin’ in the Rain”

Both Lions Clubs would like to give a big thank you to all of the hard working high school volunteers.

On Saturday, Jan 21, the Stafford Lions Club, Sienna Missouri City Lions Club, along with 15 Yes Program volunteers from both Elkins High School and Hightower High School ignored the rainy weather to plant 70 trees. These trees will help sustain wildlife and prevent erosion at the entrance to Sta-Mo Park.

The Missouri City Forrester, Paul Wierzbicki, was there to provide an understanding of the proper techniques to successfully plant a tree. We learned how to find the root flare, the area at the base of the tree where the main stem can be seen flaring out before it enters the ground. The most common mistake is burying a tree too deep. The root flare must be exposed above the mulch for the best chance of the tree’s survival. Many of the trees were named after planting, in hopes that each of the 14 varieties of trees will live a long life. The trees were donated by Apache Corp.

“Volunteering is the best form of philanthropy, claims Wierzbicki, money spends quickly, but the lessons these Lion’s members and school youth have an immediate effect in our city park and will carry on into future landscapes.”
