Scouts fill Food Pantries

Shown are some of the Scouts involved with the “Super Bowl of Caring”.

Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts in Fort Bend will be collecting food for the various food pantries in the county during the “Souper Bowl of Caring.” This will occur in two phases. On Jan. 28, door hangers will be distributed to residents where the collection will take place. On Feb. 4, compassionate and able Fort Benders will be asked to leave bags of food on their door steps, which the scouts will pick up and distribute to food pantries in Fort Bend County.

Pantries such as Helping Hands in Richmond, St. Vincent DePaul in Sugar Land, Second Mile Mission in Stafford and Sugar Grove Church of Christ in Meadows Place distribute foods to local families who are in need. Darlene Willis of Sugar Grove Church of Christ said, “Our pantry serves about 325 households per month, 363 households in December 2011, and we are witnessing an increase in needs.” While needs vary, St. Vincent DePaul distributes to about 475 families per month.

Beginning in 2010, the Sam Houston Area Council (SHAC) joined forces with the Houston Food Bank and the “Souper Bowl of Caring.” On Super Bowl Saturday of the past two years, Scouts gathered and delivered thousands of pounds of food directly to neighborhood food pantries. This year SHAC is also teaming up with the Houston Texans to “Tackle Hunger in Texas.” Through this cooperative effort, they will make this the largest food drive in southeast Texas history.
