SMSD – Did you know…

Last week’s Houston Livestock and Rodeo Art Family Night was a huge success!  Parents from all campuses attended and over 30 high school student volunteers provided activities for children (face painting, coloring, games, movie) so that parents could leisurely enjoy looking at the art.  For the second consecutive year, the top winner was high school senior Jesse Emetom.  Flory Abrego, the daughter of SMSD Payroll Specialist Elizabeth Abrego, also was among the winners whose art will be displayed at Reliant Stadium.  Go Spartans!

Seventeen middle school students are entered in the E2 Engineering Competition sponsored by HoustonWorks and Schlumberger!   The students are Lynette Amaram, Jillian Aquino, Ian Cuesta, Mikayla Drones, Aubrion Edwards, Jade Franklin, Michael Habte, Abida Khan, Tabitha Kurapati, Christal Ledesma, Cristian Ortiz, Kristian Pena, Vanessa Phung, Nikola Radojezic, Theresa Tran, Richard Tran, and Gerald Uchegbu.  The students will  compete during this city-wide event which is aimed at students who have an interest in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.  Go Spartans!

Stafford High School DECA leaders competed at the University of Houston in Sugarland last week and I am so proud of how they represented themselves, SMSD and DECA.  Top medal winners were Nick Gee, Katie Noon, Frankie Broussard, Evelyn Hinojosa, Rui Wu and Benita Thomas.  Thirty DECA leaders will be competing at the district level on Jan. 26-27 in Houston.

Stafford High School varsity football player and senior, Abe Bankole, was selected for the Honorable Mention ACADEMIC ALL-STATE 3A Football team for the 2011 season!  Abe was selected from the approximately 8,000 students representing 3A teams across the state.  Go Spartans!

The Stafford High School football team was selected by the Touchdown Club as a finalist for the 2012 Sportsmanship Award for the 2011 football season!  Nominated by game officials, SHS is one of five finalists in the Class 3A/Private Schools division and was selected by the football referees judging each team on categories including the actions of the coach, the actions of the team, the actions of the support groups (such as band, drill team, parents) and respect for the American flag.  The Touchdown Club partners with Comerica Bank and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to host a luncheon to honor the teams recognized for this great honor.  The luncheon is at 12:00 noon, January 25th, at the JW Marriott located at 5150 Westheimer in Houston.  Go Spartans!

For the second consecutive year, Stafford Middle School has a Crystal Award winner!   Principal, Dr. Phyllis Tyler, was notified that Mrs. Preeti Joseph, 8th grade science teacher and department chairperson, is a 2012 recipient.  The award is jointly sponsored by the Houston Chronicle in Education and Spring Branch Education Foundation.  As a winner, she will receive both monetary and professional development rewards and will be recognized at a banquet in late February.  Mrs. Joseph was nominated by 2011 Crystal Award recipient and peer, Mr. Paul Roberts.  Go Spartans!

Last Friday Stafford Texas Instruments’ representatives delivered 15 new coats to the elementary school in response to a request to community merchants by the campus Student Council Sponsor Linda Mankin.  TI employees annually host a “Back-to-School” supply drive for our students and a luncheon for new teachers.  Thank you TI!

Rack Room Shoes, located in the Stafford Fountains, gave thirty middle school students new shoes!  Through a grant program sponsored by the company, the students and their parents were treated to a special evening at the store and were able to pick out one pair of shoes with the maximum value of $30.  In addition, each student received a warm welcome by district and regional managers and a goody bag with lots of treats in it.  Students were selected by their teachers.  Middle/high school counselor, Grace Landry, said the event was a joyful experience for all!  Thank you Rack Room Shoes!

This year ALL students in Stafford MSD will take part in national reading challenge called “Read The Most From Coast To Coast”!  Students will be reading in the halls and reading in the malls preparing for the event that culminates on Dr. Seuss’s Birthday – March 2nd.   The event challenges students to shatter the national one-day record by taking an Accelerated Reader™ Quiz over a book.   All participants will receive a Certificate of National Participation.  Go Spartans!

The Stafford Education Foundation is hosting its 3rd Annual Golf Tournament Thursday, March 15, 2012, at the Sienna Plantation Golf Club.  The tournament will begin  with a 12:30 pm Shot Gun start and include lunch, dinner, and GREAT door prizes including a premium shotgun, 42” LCD TV, I-Pod, I-Pod Player, Laptop Notebook Computer, Digital Camera and numerous other items.  All proceeds are used exclusively for teacher classroom grants and student scholarships. Past events have netted the foundation over $54,000.00!  A registration form is attached and can also be downloaded from the district website.  Volunteers are needed to support activities prior and on the day of the event.  To volunteer or for additional information, email

Parents and students can learn about applying for scholarships and financial aid on Tuesday, February, 7th, at 6:00 pm  in the Margaret Havens Library Media Center.   Presented by Texas Southern University, the information will help explain how to take advantage of financial resources offered for college.    The George Foundation is also hosting a scholarship information event Thursday, January 19th, at 6:00 pm at the George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview Drive, in Richmond.  Attendees will learn, ask questions, and get answers about scholarship, funding, FAFSA, and library resources.  For additional information, call  (281) 342-6109.

Volunteers are needed for the 10th Annual Mars Rover Celebration, January 28th, at the University of Houston campus. Mars Rover Celebration is an exciting educational opportunity for primary and middle school students to learn how to build a model rover to perform a mission on Mars.  For the second consecutive year, Stafford Middle School has students entering; over 700 children, organized into 204 teams, are entered.   Volunteer opportunities include judging and serving as a tour guide.  High School students are encouraged to volunteer.  The attached flyer provides details on the event-online registration and more information on the volunteer roles needed and the amount of time required, are available at

Free GED classes have come to Second Mile (located at 504 FM 1092, Suite I, Stafford, TX, 77477) thanks to a partnership with Region IV Education Service Center. Classes are led by Harriet Smith (left) and meet Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Registration starts today and is ongoing.
