Clements Cadets get a surprise visit from Congressman Pete Olson
On Friday, January 27, Congressman Pete Olson was at Clements High School presenting a Humanities Texas Award; during his tour of the campus he requested to speak to the cadets.
He reflected on the units’ distinguished accomplishments and the value of the program to our nation’s future. He answered cadets’ questions concerning the proposed Oil Pipeline and Protect IP Act 2011, just to list a few. First year cadets were astonished to see Congressman Olson; amazed that he would find time in his busy schedule to visit them.
Last year when the Navy elected to close the unit; Congressman Olson came to the rescue. He wrote congressional letters, made phone calls, made personal visits and somehow convinced the Assistant Secretary of the Navy to visit Clements campus.
Even though the unit had to convert to a Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC), the cadets are still hopeful to be reinstated after this school year. Just last week Congressman Olson wrote a letter to Assistant Secretary Juan Garcia encouraging him to convert the unit back to NJROTC.
