Twenty-two students from Stafford Middle School participated in the city-wide HoustonWorks USA and Schlumberger Limited 2012 E² Engineering Excellence preliminary competition on February 4, taking home five awards in the Future City Competition.

E² was established to ignite an interest in engineering careers by inspiring curiosity, confidence, and excellence as students work in teams with an educator and an engineer mentor. The Future City competition is a national, project-based experience where students imagine, design, and build cities of the future. The competitions requires use of both practical math and science concepts to solve real-world issues. Students must submit an essay, presentation, poster board, and 3-D display of their project. The following awards were given:

• Best Engineered City – Kendall Reavis, Aibel Raju, Jose Mendoza and Michael     Habte

• Best Residential Design City – Ian Cuesta, Cristian Ortiz, Aaron Smith, Nikola     Radojevic, Gerald Uchegbu, and Richard Tran

• Best Human Engineered City Design – Vanessa Phung, Tabitha Kurapati, Lynette Amaram, Jade Franklin, and Jasmine James

• Best Student Presentation – Aibel Raju

• Best Engineering Process Teacher – Preeti Joseph

The winners will advance to the final round of the E² competition on February 18 at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
