Global Tapestry Middle School Anti-Bullying Summit held at Elkins High School

Elkins High School hosted its Global Tapestry Middle School Anti-Bullying Summit to help middle school students spread awareness of the importance of reporting acts of bullying. Elkins student leaders representing TEAR (Teens Educated Against Racism), Student Council and Red Cross helped facilitate the conference by leading the middle school participants in various activities that included developing public service announcements and anti-bullying posters to take back to their campuses, role-playing, an icebreaker scavenger hunt and butterfly decorating contest.

“The main purpose of the conference was to allow our high school students to help communicate the ‘No Place for Hate’ message by addressing one of the biggest problems facing students today, bullying,” said Jackie Bickerstaff, Elkins Communication Applications teacher and summit coordinator. “We want FBISD students to learn to be proactive and to take a stand against bullying so that we all can enjoy a peaceful and safe learning environment.”

In the fall, approximately 30 Elkins students helped facilitate the Beau and Abe Merfish Foundation’s “No Place for Hate” Youth Summit, where they trained middle school students on how to recognize, prevent and respond to bullying. The knowledge and skills they gained during that youth summit prepared the Elkins teens for facilitating the Global Tapestry Summit.

The Global Tapestry Summit also featured remarks from Elkins High School theater teacher, Andrea Cope, who shared her family’s journey of survival during the Holocaust.
