Attendees “Warm Up” with good books at 12th Annual Book & Author Dinner
Guests “Warmed Up With Several Good Books” at the Literacy Council’s 12th Annual Book & Author Dinner on Sunday, January 29 at Safari Texas Ranch. Over $50,000 was raised to benefit the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County’s programs, but more importantly, guests were able to understand the consequences of illiteracy in our community.
As the first celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Literacy Council began, attendees were able to mingle with the authors and purchase their books for author signings. To commemorate the 25th Anniversary, Karyn Dean recalled the first Book & Author Dinner as the inaugural Chair of the event. James Evans from Premier Photography provided a photo booth, underwritten by Classic Chevrolet, and guests took fun and comical pictures for the Literacy Council’s 25th Anniversary scrapbook and included a brief note with their strip of photos.
Shortly before dinner, Michael Schiff and Bill Hickl announced Alan Martinez as the 2012 Jan Schiff Scholarship Award Winner. In addition, all of the guest authors were given the opportunity to introduce themselves and their books. The evening was masterfully emceed by Nancy Olson.
The highlight of the evening was when Alan Martinez, the Jan Schiff Scholarship winner, commented on how much the award meant to him. Alan’s story touched many hearts as he told the audience of bad decisions he had made earlier in his life, and his determination to turn his life around and obtain his GED when he came to the Literacy Council. With this scholarship, Alan plans to attend Houston Community College to pursue a degree in psychology and counseling. Upon Alan’s return to his table after his comments, his embrace with his Dad was a truly remarkable and heartfelt moment.
During the evening, guests had the opportunity to sign-up for “A Culinary Evening with Christy Rost” to support the Literacy Council. The evening with Christy Rost will be held on Sunday, April 29 at the Aliana Clubhouse. Christy is a television chef, author of two cookbooks and a radio personality. The public is invited to attend as part of the special 25th celebration to bring Christy back to Sugar Land. Individual tickets are $75 and include dinner, drinks and demonstration.
