Quail Valley GT Academy Students receive visit from “Bionic Bride”

Shown (from left to right) are: Connie Carrillo, GT Academy science teacher; Ally Babineaux, “Bionic Bride;” Christine Chacko, seventh-grade GT student; and Thomas Heinly, principal at Quail Valley Middle School.

The seventh-grade Quail Valley GT Academy students took part in a special presentation on February 17 as they welcomed Ally Smith Babineaux, recipient of a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) from the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital. Known as the “Bionic Bride,” Babineaux was in Houston for a medical check-up and agreed to visit the GT Academy to share her story and spread awareness about heart disease in women and young children.

At age 18, Babineaux was diagnosed with viral cardiomyopathy, a disease that weakens the heart and causes life-threatening problems in other parts of the body. She received a heart transplant in 2011 and became known as the “Bionic Bride” after being married while implanted with her heart pump.

The GT students learned about Babineaux from watching a video clip link that GT science teachers shared with them during their study on the cardiovascular system. Student Christine Chacko was so moved by the video that she shared the experience with her parents, who surprisingly know Babineaux’s mother. They worked with seventh-grade science teacher, Connie Carrillo, to arrange the visit from Babineaux.
