Ft. Bend Optimist Club names Oratorical Contest winners

The Ft. Bend Optimist Club Sugar Land held it’s annual Oratorical Contest for the youth of our community on Tuesday, April 3. There were 5 girl competitors and 3 boy competitors. The speeches were written by each student and they had to adhere to rules of the contest. Each applicant was required to give a 4 to 5 minute speech.

This year the topic was: “How my Optimism Helps me Overcome Obstacles”. The Oratorical Contest is for young people under the age of 18 as of December 31, 2011, who have not yet graduated from high school or the equivalent and are educated in the United States, Canada or the Caribbean.

This year the Club awarded the winners each a check for $125, the second place winners each received $75 and the third place winners received $50. The Winners progress to the next level where they will each have a chance to win up to $2,500 in scholarship money. This year the winners of our Club contest were:

Girl’s Contest
1st place: Lauren Petty
2nd place: Paula Morrissette
3rd place: Kalpana Vaidya

Boy’s Contest
1st place: Trey Tobias
2nd place: Seth Blankenship
3rd place: Michael Dale
