State jail time for two hogs

By LeaAnne Klentzman

After realizing that he was getting ripped off the owner of a Stafford Chevron on South Main out smarted a pair of crooks.

According to the District Attorney’s office, the station owner rigged up video equipment for security at the station. He wisely had the system broadcast the signal from the station to his home. Shortly thereafter – the trap was set and the bait was taken.

In early January of 2010 the owner watched as a white Freightliner truck pulled into the closed station about midnight. When two men got out of the truck, the owner immediately called police. As he continued to watch the surveillance video, Stafford police officers arrived. As the investigation unfolded, police discovered that the truck was parked directly over the access to the underground storage tanks. How handy!

One crook was hiding under the truck on a secret shelf, right next to a hidden pump. He was at the ready with a flashlight and a hammer getting ready to open the storage tank and drop in the pump. Imagine his surprise when police lit him up with flashlights! Good thing no one was smoking…. He and his Freightliner would have vaporized!

The Freightliner was rigged with several different fuel tanks making it not only a theft device but also a rolling bomb.

This pair is just lucky that back in 2010 fuel was cheaper – at today’s prices they would have made it all the way to the Big House not just the play yard.
