Briscoe Junior High student National Ambassador in essay contest

Briscoe Junior High English teacher Lisa Mays, Do the Write Thing National Ambassador Bronson Teles, and Briscoe Junior High principal Mike Semmler.

Briscoe Junior High 8th-grader Bronson Teles is a National winner in the 2012 Do the Write Thing Challenge. Teles will serve as a National Ambassador for Houston/Harris County.

Do the Write Thing essay contest is part of national campaign to end youth violence. Each essay was asked to address three questions:
· How has violence affected my life?;
· What are the causes of youth violence?; and
· What can I do about youth violence?

A total of 11,614 students in the Houston area wrote anti-violence essays this year and only 210 were chosen as School Finalists.  From the 210 school Finalists, two were chosen as State Ambassadors and two were chosen as National Ambassadors.

Bronson will go to Austin, June 8 – 10, to meet with the other Texas School Finalists for a recognition ceremony. He also is invited to the National Recognition Ceremony, July 14 -18  in Washington D.C.,  hosted by the National Campaign to Stop Violence, where he will meet with other Student Ambassadors from throughout the United States.

His English teacher Lisa Mays will also be invited to attend both ceremonies.

Bronson and his family will be honored April 28 at a reception at Minute Maid Park, where he read his paper, in which he compares bullies to the violence witnessed by his parents in their native South Africa.

“I believe that I am at an age where it is possible to change our generation’s way of thinking regarding accepted out cultures and religions, not to be so stereotyped,” he wrote. “If we can unite and respect each other for who we are and what we stand for, then less friction will occur and less violence.”
