Monday night at the movies at University Branch Library goes animated in May
The University Branch Library’s “Monday Night Movies at the Library” series goes animated in May. Each week’s movie features a different animated film. The movies begin at 6:00 pm every Monday in May (except Memorial Day), and will be shown in the Small Meeting Room of the University Branch Library, located at 14010 University Blvd. in Sugar Land, on the UH campus.
The first movie of the month will be shown on Monday, May 7. In this animated movie, a young girl named Sophie is cursed by a witch and turned into an old woman. Ashamed of how she looks, Sophie flees into the woods and happens upon Wizard Hauru’s strange Moving Castle. While in the castle, Sophie makes a deal with a demon named Calcifer, who can return her to her 18-year-old self. This movie is rated PG.
On Monday, May 14, the movie to be shown is an animated feature about a panda living his life as The Dragon Warrior, protecting the Valley of Peace and his fellow kung-fu masters. The panda’s new life of awesomeness is threatened by the emergence of a formidable villain who plans to use a secret, unstoppable weapon to conquer China and destroy kung fu. Only after looking to his past and uncovering the secrets to his mysterious origin can our panda hero unlock the strength he needs to succeed. This movie is rated PG.
The film on Monday, May 21, is an animated feature released in 2001. Chihiro and her parents are moving to a new house in Japan’s countryside, when they take a detour down a wooded path. They encounter an abandoned town that is strangely full of restaurants with delicious meals waiting to be eaten. While her parents do not hesitate to gorge themselves, Chihiro decides to investigate the mysterious town. She encounters a young boy named Haku, who cautions her to leave town before nightfall. When she runs to warn her parents, she finds that they’ve been turned into pigs. Haku helps Chihiro survive by working in a bathhouse for Japanese gods and spirits while she tries to find a way to save her parents before they become the main course on a dinner platter. This movie is rated PG.
