Schiff Elem. teachers plan summer mission trip to Honduras

Schiff Elementary 3rd-grade teacher Lauren Waggoner (center) takes a break with 4th-grade Schiff teacher Meg Pickert and mission worker Mark Howell near the border of Honduras during a mission trip to the area last summer.

While most teachers spend their summer relaxing and enjoying time off from school, Schiff Elementary teachers and Fort Bend residents Lauren Waggoner and Christy Brown plan on spending this upcoming summer a bit differently.

Along with fellow Schiff teacher Meg Pickert, the trio will travel to Honduras, July 22-30, where they will build a facility to store supplies for an orphanage, distribute food and lead a Vacation Bible School. The group traveled to Honduras last year on a similar trip when they worked tirelessly to deliver 50-pound bags of food staples to families living in remote villages.

“It’s definitely not your typical summer vacation,” says Waggoner, a third-grade teacher at Schiff Elementary. “However it’s extremely gratifying and certainly is an experience we can share with our students here at the school.”

Pickert teaches 4th grade at Schiff Elementary while Brown is a Speech Pathologist at the school.

“So many of our teachers contribute to improve the quality of lives of others right here in our community and around the world,” says Schiff Elementary Principal Mary Brewster. “They not only represent our school, but the community of Fort Bend County. We’re very proud of them.”

Waggoner, Brown and Pickert aren’t traveling to Honduras empty handed. Instead, their bags will be packed with unused notebooks, pencils and other school supplies collected at Schiff Elementary during the school year.
