More than 500 students took part in FBISD’s 2012 High School Diversity Conference, held at the George Ranch Historical Park in February. The conference was created to increase awareness, improve communication and develop mutual understanding among diverse groups. This year’s conference theme was “Peace, Love and Respect,” which served as a reminder of the program’s purpose.

Students were greeted and welcomed to the event by members of the District Student Advisory Committee (DSAC) and Diversity Committee. The students took part in several ice-breakers (such as Elevate your Body exercises) to get them energized for the day’s events.

The keynote speaker was A. Denise Malloy, Senior Account Executive and president of the Field African American Affinity Network with Johnson Controls. She encouraged students to set goals in life and guide themselves with inner peace and self-respect. “Inner peace allows you to measure yourself on your own barometer and not someone else’s,” said Malloy, “and self-respect is the fuel of your self-control.”

Following the opening remarks, students attended small group sessions led by professionals representing FBISD and area businesses. The group sessions gave the students the opportunity to discuss such topics as “bullying” and “stereotyping and profiling.” During a working lunch, they also completed a “Campus Planning Action Plan” to address issues they have encountered on campus.

The conference allowed time for recognition of the 2012 Quiz Bowl participants and District Champions. The Quiz Bowl team from Ridge Point High School was presented with its Championship trophy during the conference.
