Some’s Hot, Some’s Not 05/02/12

Take me out……. Boy is this town baseball mad. Or rather, they are mad about baseball.

Crowds are growing every night, and it’s been reported that the audience is becoming more and more connected with the players, both individually and as a group. The fans are learning the players’ names and are cheering more and more.

Go soon while the weather is good. There are all sorts of things for the kids to do and you can hang out at the ice house to watch them.

If you haven’t been yet, go! Support the team! See the team schedule in this week’s Star.

Now for something entirely different….. I want to tell you about someone running for office that I want you to vote for. Her name is Brenda Mullinix and for the past seven years, she has been the associate judge for Judge Robert Kern’s 387 Judicial District family law court.

Before that, she was an attorney focusing on family law. And even before that, she taught school. She’s been married (to the same man) for the past 38 years and has two children and seven grandchildren.

Judge Mullinix is running for the judgeship because Judge Kern is retiring.

There is only one other female judge (above a municipal judge) in Fort Bend County, Judge Susan Lowery, and she is one of the best judges in Fort Bend.

Judge Mullinix was running unopposed (everybody thought she was the best candidate and didn’t want to run against her) until the filing was reopened during the dust-up over redistricting. During that time, her opponent went around telling everyone that a woman couldn’t get elected to a judgeship in Fort Bend County. When reminded about Judge Lowery, he reportedly called her election “a fluke.”

So Mike Elliott signed up to run during the reopened filing period and brought all his baggage with him.

Elliott copied the signage that Judge Brady Elliott uses. Judge Brady Elliott is not up for reelection this year, so Mike Elliott is appropriating his name ID and counting on his wife, District Clerk Annie Elliott to provide some more name I.D.

Mike Elliott’s baggage includes the fact that previously as an assistant district attorney he was fired by District Attorney John Healey, who seldom fires anyone, but not before he prosecuted some questionable cases.

Old Fort Bend residents will remember that he prosecuted Houston Oiler Warren Moon for abuse although his wife refused to file against him. Shortly after that or during that time Mike Elliott’s then wife Andrea called 9-1-1 on a domestic violence call. DA Healey hired a special prosecutor, Bob Bennett, and no charges were ever filed.

Bailiffs around the courthouse, who call him a bully, report that he parks wherever he wants around the courthouses, and they are afraid to arrest him as it’s in the city of Richmond and there are territorial questions.

Also as an ADA, Elliott was using illegal agricultural plates on his truck and only stopped after a local newspaper wrote about it. As an ADA, he should have known the law about the plates.

He was involved in a questionable case involving Holden Roofing. He was one of the few ADAs allowed to maintain private clients of which Holden Roofing was reportedly one.

When a crew at Holden Roofing quit suddenly, Mike Elliott, took Holden over to Rosenberg PD in his capacity as Holden’s attorney (but Rosenberg certainly knew him as a district attorney) and purportedly had a bunch of felony charges filed against the crew. Everybody hired a lawyer, and a half million dollars later, the charges were reduced to a couple of misdemeanors.

Elliott also played the same role in his friendship with campaign manager Karen Pearson Vannerson and her troubles with her boyfriend, who went gambling with her. When he broke up with her she decided to sue him for the money she gave him and declared it was a loan.

It was handled as a criminal case whereas if it had happened to one of us, it would have been declared a civil case. The boyfriend was found guilty and its been reported to me that was because the jury hated Mr. Sula and his inept attorney more than they hated Ms. Vannerson.

Mike Elliott has been involved in too many questionable actions in the Fort Bend judicial system for too many years. He has publicly stated that he will turn the 387 District Court into a half criminal, half family law court. He can’t even do that. But he has so little experience in family law, which that court was especially created for, that he has to bray about something.

Maybe he wants to be judge so he can finally carry a gun in the courtroom. He’s been caught before with a gun and now that he is only a private attorney, that is not allowed.

Now I know I ranted about electing Jeff McMeans as judge because he ran on his daddy’ name and I have to say that according to all reports, he is doing a great job.

But we’ve seen what Mike Elliott can do. We’ve had experience with him. Electing him would be about the worst thing we could do for the judicial system in Fort Bend.

Brenda Millinix has the experience, work ethic, and skills to be a fine judge for Fort Bend County.

Rearing its head again….. Candidates have been receiving letters from the Fort Bend Business PAC which wants to talk to them. Information about the group is sketchy as it is listed at the Fort Bend BETTER Business PAC in an email signed by former Sugar Land Mayor Dean Hrbacek and a letter under the name of the Fort Bend Business PAC, also signed by Hrbacek.

Candidates for the school board in FBISD and Katy ISD are asked to come to Sugar Creek Country Club to meet with a screening committee.

This has been tried before with limited success. And this time we don’t know who is doing the endorsing–The Fort Bend BETTER Business PAC or the Fort Bend Business PAC.

So I guess Dean Hrbacek is getting back into politics.

MULLINIX IS ROCK SOLID……………SHE IS HONORABLE, ETHICAL COMES FROM A GOOD FAMILY HAS GOOD KIDS AND A GREAT HUSBAND. SHE LOVES HER JOB AND SHE LOVES HER COMMUNITY. SHE HAS SINCERE CONCERN FOR HER CASES THAT ARE BEFORE HER AND THERE IS NO REASON THAT ANYBODY IN FORT BEND COUNTY SHOULD VOTE FOR ANYONE ELSE. I FIND IT AWFUL THAT THE COUNTY WOULD EVEN LET ANYONE AS UNSAVORY AS MIKE ELLIOTT RUN FOR JUDGE. IF THE DA HAD TO FIRE HIM FOR BEING UNETHICAL WHY WOULD WE AS A PEOPLE VOTE FOR HIM AS A FAMILY COURT JUDGE.
