Boosting brain power with super foods

Alzheimer’s and other memory loss diseases are on the rise in America, yet research suggests that a healthy diet rich in super foods, including berries and dark chocolate, may be an important key in preserving brain health.

Silverado Senior Living, Sugar Land – a senior living community for people affected by memory loss – hosted a free open house for Houston area families to explore the brain-benefits of food in “A Taste of Silverado.” The two-day event on May 12 and 13 took visitors on a taste bud-directed tour of the Sugar Land community and allowed guests to experience first-hand how super foods, combined with mental, physical and social engagement activities, help slow down memory decline.

“This weekend we invited the community out to show the importance of food in maintaining a healthy mind,” said Carrie Boisen, Administrator for Silverado. “This nutritional focus is just one facet in our philosophy of care, which centers on nurturing the human spirit by stimulating mental and physical abilities, rather than focusing on limitations. Together with our residents and staff, we created healthy-for-your-brain foods and enjoyed a weekend of community fun.”

Highlights included Silverado’s Resident Cooking Club whipping up cinnamon bread and southern sour cream cake. In addition, all attendees were treated to freshly baked blueberry scones and a decadent sample of dark chocolate for the journey home – both chocked full of brain-enriching antioxidants that help increase blood flow to the brain, boosting learning and memory capacity.
