SING YOUR SONG: Harry Belafonte – Docurama

Told with a remarkable sense of intimacy, visual style and musical panache, Susanne Rostock’s inspiring biographical documentary Sing Your Song surveys the life and times of singer/actor/activist Harry Belafonte. From his rise to fame as a singer and his experiences touring a segregated country to his provocative crossover into Hollywood, Belafonte’s groundbreaking career personifies the American civil rights movement. Rostock reveals Belafonte as a tenacious hands-on activist who worked intimately with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., mobilized celebrities for social justice, participated in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa and took action to counter gang violence, prisons, and the incarceration of youth. Because of his beliefs, Belafonte drew unwarranted invasions by the FBI into both his personal life and career, which led to years of struggle. But an indomitable sense of optimism motivates his path even today as he continues to ask, at 84, “What do we do now?” His example may very well inspire you to action.

MONROE: Series One – Acorn

Dr. Gabriel Monroe (James Nesbitt, Murphy’s Law) is a neurosurgical genius with a quick wit and a heart to match his titanic ego. Following no rules but his own, Monroe infuriates colleagues and terrifies interns with his glib repartee and arrogant self-regard. Pitting his formidable skills against high-risk medical emergencies is only one of Monroe’s challenges. He and his team must also navigate the toll that medicine takes on patients and doctors—especially when dealing with their personal lives. As slick as he is with a scalpel, Monroe struggles at home as a husband and father, and at work he clashes with brusque heart surgeon Dr. Jenny Bremner (Sarah Parish, The Pillars of the Earth). With a dose of House’s dark humor and an infusion of humanity and warmth, Monroe is gripping medical drama at its best.

TRUE BLOOD: Season Four – HBO

True Blood is the sexy, scary, wildly entertaining drama series from Oscar®- and Emmy®-winning Alan Ball, and based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris. Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor, True Blood tells the continuing tale of Sookie (Anna Paquin), a human waitress with telepathic gifts – and a so-far irresistible attraction to 174-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer). Surrounded by familiar faces – including her brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten), shape-shifting boss Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell), soul-searching pal Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley), Tara’s cousin Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis); police chief Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer), vampire suitor Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård) and teen vamp Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) – Sookie faces some new otherworldly threats in this season – as if vampires, werewolves, werepanthers and shapeshifters weren’t enough!

The Degrassi Community School isn’t easy for anyone, especially the teenagers attending the campus.   Whether it be relationship issues, troubles at home or even poor decision making, the drama surrounding the campus life is palpable.  This season, the Degrassi crew will experience everything, including enemies, insecurities, break ups and the every present hormonal issues.   As some of the students graduate and move on, another class of students moves into the school.  There are 29 episodes from season 11 that are included in this set.  Check out one of the better shows that focuses on campus life right here.

MAVERICK: Season One – Warner

In Maverick: The Complete First Season, wisecracking ladies’ man Bret Maverick (James Garner) and his more serious brother Bart (Jack Kelly) – two handsome bachelors on the loose in the Wild West – have more success at the game of poker than the game of love. Yet they keep trying their luck in one frontier outpost after another. For fans of classic TV Westerns such as Cheyenne, Bonanza and Gunsmoke, Maverick: The Complete First Season is sure to be a perfect addition to their collections!
