Southeast Texas “Mother of All Walks” held in Sugar Land

More than 500 supporters attended the walk. These gentlemen stand in respect to those lives lost by drunk drivers.

On Saturday, May 19, at Oyster Creek Park, over 550 supporters, victim families and friends, volunteers, and MADD staff participated in the Annual Walk Like MADD for Mothers Against Drunk Driving affiliate programs.  This was the second year that the Walk Like MADD was held in Sugar Land for the 10 counties that the SE Texas MADD affiliate serves.

Walk Like MADD 2012 offered a full morning of meaningful and moving presentations including a police officer on bagpipes playing “Amazing Grace” in memorial for all victims killed by a drunk driver. Great food, DJ music and fun events throughout the morning abounded.

There were over 60 law enforcement Officers, from numerous counties, parked in Law Enforcement Lane to answer questions, demonstrate vehicles and programs, horse and canine patrols, and actual stories of drunk driving arrests.

A beautiful and interactive tribute area was set up for walkers to honor their loved one(s) that might have been killed by a drunk driver. Many of those honored in the tribute area were children and teenagers.

Many of the volunteers, that helped throughout the walk, were local Ft. Bend citizens from the Ft. Bend County MADD Chapter, First United Methodist Church of Missouri City, Boy Scout Troop #103, students from several local high schools, and numerous adults.

Walk Like MADD reached 100% of the goal raising over $60,000, setting a new all time high total.  All monies raised at the walk stay in Southeast Texas helping to further the important missions of MADD that include eliminating drunk driving from our roads, supporting the families and victims of this violent crime, and the education of children and teens to prevent underage drinking.
