Texas Bar Foundation awards grant to Child Advocates of Fort Bend

The Texas Bar Foundation recently awarded Child Advocates of Fort Bend a $5,000 grant. The funds will be used to partially fund a therapist position in the Children’s Advocacy Center to provide services to sexually or seriously physically abused children. Child Advocates of Fort Bend’s therapy program began in 2004. The program, which started with one full-time therapist, has grown to three full-time licensed therapists. In 2011, the therapists provided 1,641 therapy sessions to 178 children and their non-offending family members. All services are offered free of charge.

Child Advocates of Fort Bend provides a voice for abused and neglected children in Fort Bend County. The therapists provide therapy to children ranging in age from 3-18, offer caregivers groups to help parents learn skills to help their children heal, and provide expert testimony in criminal and civil court. Children can participate in therapeutic services for as long as they need to heal from their abuse. Despite the addition of a third therapist, the number of children in need of services continues to increase and there continues to be a waiting list for therapy.

Volunteers are needed to help in the agency’s Children’s Advocacy Center and in the Court Appointed Special Advocates Program. For information on volunteering contact Volunteer Services at 281-344-5130.
