Fort Bend ISD parents are better prepared to help their children transition to middle school after having participated in the TOMS (Transitioning On to Middle School) program. TOMS, led by Parent Resource Center coordinators and Title I social workers, was implemented at 19 Title I elementary schools during the school year to help fifth and six-grade parents gain the knowledge needed to ensure their children’s academic and social success after entering middle school.

“The TOMS program is unique in that it is primarily home based and reaches all parents, even those who are unable to attend school events because they either have to work, don’t have transportation or have young children in their care,” said Priti Avantsa, Title I social worker.

Throughout the year-long imitative, parents receive interactive activity sheets from Parent Resource Center coordinators regarding school expectations, rules, and consequences for disregarding school policy. The fall component of TOMS supports and encourages parents to ensure a positive and open communication with their children and educates them on attendance rules and laws. In the spring, parents focus on more specific information about middle school, including course selections and curriculum.

The program concluded in May with an end-of-year social at each of the participating schools where parents addressed concerns, asked questions and received advice on what to do during the summer to prepare their children for entry into middle school.
