Kempner Thespians traveled to national competition

Kempner Thespians traveled to national competition. Returning from Nebraska, these Thespian Cougars are all smiles – Shown Back Row (Left to Right): Ryan Moore, Chelsie Scheffer, Shannen Soffar, Elizabeth Jackson, Kendrick James, Kate McCroskey; Front Row (Left to Right): Ms. Dinah Mahlman, Clair Daly, Ki-mei Dyo, Vanessa Lau, Andrea Mendoza, Kelli Valdez, and Ty Hughes.

Last week, several members of Kempner High School Troupe 4385 competed at International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska. The entrants earned a birth in the contest by receiving an overall Superior rating at the Texas festival this past December.

At the national festival, nearly 800 students from all over the country showcased their talents in a variety of individual event categories. Under the direction of Troupe Sponsor, Dinah Mahlman, the Duet Mime team of Andrea Mendoza and Ty Hughes received an Excellent rating as did the Duet Musical team of Vanessa Lau and Ryan Moore.

Singing “Forget About the Boy” from the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie”, the team of Kelli Valdez, Shannen Soffar, Elizabeth Jackson, Clair Daly, Kate McCroskey and Ki-Mei Dyo not only received a Superior rating, they were also the only Group Musical selected to perform their song and tap routine in the prestigious Mainstage Showcase, an honor bestowed on the top twelve individual events at the competition.

Performing on the Mainstage, the six young ladies had the great privilege of presenting their musical selection for the entire conference of nearly 3,000 theatre students gathered in Lincoln.
