Stafford MSD reminds parents about free and reduced lunch program

By Karen Daniels

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP), a program started in 1946 by President Harry Truman, is a federally assisted meal program that provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each day at school. Stafford MSD participates in this program and would like to remind the parents of students in the district to fill out their application so they don’t lose privileges or miss out on this opportunity.

Each year the paperwork must be completed and submitted, something a lot of parents don’t realize. The forms are handed out the first week of school, however they can also be filled out in person or on line. Bilingual staff is available to help or answer questions. Here are some helpful facts:

• Only 1 application per household needs to be filled out (Not 1 per child)

• Foster, homeless, or migrant children are eligible

• You can apply anytime during the year should your income change

• If you participate in SNAP or TANF you qualify for free meals regardless of your income

• If a spouse is deployed in a combat zone you do not count their combat pay as income

• You do not need to be a US citizen to apply

If you have any further questions, Stafford’s Child Nutrition Department can be reached at 281-261-9289. If your family needs more help, to learn more about other assistance programs dial 211.
