Fort Bend Y dedicates Earle Family Support

Earle Family Dedication - Shown (l-r): Eric Schenkelberg, Fort Bend YMCA Group Executive, and Doug Earle.

At a recent Fort Bend YMCA board meeting and reception held at the Fort Bend YMCA in Missouri City, current and past YMCA volunteers joined the staff  in recognizing Captain and Mrs. Leonard H. Earle for their support of the YMCA.

During the ceremony, Eric Schenkelberg, Fort Bend YMCA Group Executive announced that the YMCA was recognizing the Earle Family with a dedication of the new pool covered pavilion and child watch playground shade structure at the Missouri City facility.  The improvements were funded through a gift from Mrs. Charlotte Earle and the late Captain Earle, who passed away in 2007.  On behalf of the Earle Family, Doug Earle, former Fort Bend Y Executive and son of Captain and Mrs. Earle, accepted a brass dedication plaque that will be displayed at the outdoor pool complex of the YMCA.

Before the official dedication, Gary Nichols, retired Sr. VP of the YMCA of Greater Houston, provided some background on Captain and Mrs. Earle to the crowd.  According to Nichols, both Leonard and Charlotte grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  At the age of 16, Leonard Earle became a seaman in the Merchant Marines.  By age 24, Captain Earle obtained his Master Mariner’s License and became the youngest captain in the Standard Oil Fleet.  Later in his career, Captain Earle moved his family to Houston, Texas where he held the position of the Port Captain for Houston.   Mr. Nichols went on to explain that both Captain and Mrs. Earle were very active volunteers and community supporters and instilled this same trait of Christian service to their three children.  Mr. Nichols ended his comments by stating, “The Earle Family have been a blessing to all whose lives they have touched and helping us all to achieve our greatest potential as children of God.”

Thanks to donations from individuals like the Earle Family, the YMCA can truly fulfill the aforementioned goal. To find out more about the Fort Bend YMCA or how you can volunteer or donate to the organization, call Eric Schenkelberg at (281)499-9622 or go to the web site at
