FBISD delays naming interim superintendent

By Betsy Dolan

Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees were unable to name an interim superintendent at a called meeting on July 23 because two of the board members, Grayle James and Dave Rosenthal, were on vacation and unable to vote. The district’s Assistant Superintendent, Mike McKie, 53, is currently the acting superintendent.

On July 9, the board voted unanimously to allow Superintendent Dr. Timothy Jenney, 59, to retire, despite renewing his contract through 2016. The board also agreed to pay Jenney a year’s salary and benefits as well as a $18,000 performance bonus, half of the amount he qualified for under his contract. Jenney is on paid leave through his official retirement in January and is taking his unused vacation and leave days, which he has accumulated.

McKie, was a finalist to be a superintendent in New Mexico in June but did not get the job. He has worked as an educator since the late 1980s and holds a master’s degree in education administration from Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas. McKie was a teacher for the district in the late 1980s and later was an assistant principal for Willowridge High School. For several years, he oversaw all of the Fort Bend district’s high schools.

“I’ve made a commitment to the district to remain here until the hiring process is complete,” McKie said. “Since Dr. Jenney is still the Superintendent, from an integrity point of view, it is a conflict of interest to talk about whether I would apply for that position.”

McKie will be involved in the hiring of several key positions in the district including the chief academic officer, chief of human resources, the general counsel and the chief over auxiliary services which includes maintenance and transportation.

Jim Rice, the Fort Bend ISD board president, said he hopes the board will hire a new superintendent by January.
