Hightower HS HOSA Students are National Champions

Several Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) students from Hightower High School’s Medical Science Academy earned an unprecedented number of championship medals after competing in HOSA National Competitive Events at the HOSA 2012 National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida.
The competition is designed to motivate HOSA members to study, work hard and achieve a high standard of excellence in various leadership and skill disciplines. Students compete in various events, including medical spelling, home health aide, clinical specialty, biomedical debate, health education and forensic medicine. More than 7,000 students competed in this year’s events.
Hightower HOSA students earning awards this year were:
• Omar Zahid, Josef Alvarez and Dhrumil Patel – Gold Medal, Creative Problem Solving
• Jane Zhu, Saif Merchant and Anita Vasudevan – Gold Medal, Health Education (This team advanced from 4th place in the 2011 competition with their project that educates secondary school students about the dangers of alcohol abuse.)
• Jaskeerat Ghulati – Silver Medal, Healthy Lifestyles (Ghulati kept a year-long log of nutrition and physical activity to demonstrate a long-term commitment to improved health.)
• Gideon Oyekanmi – Bronze Medal, Biotechnology (Oyekanmi completed a demanding written exam, demonstrating his skills in research techniques that involved DNA synthesis, genomics and hematology.)

• Shanda McKinney – Epidemiology
• Riya Patel – Human Growth and Development
• Jonathan Wang, Super Patadia, Tariq Mansuri and Aakash Jacob – Public Health Emergency Preparedness
