Fort Bend ISD students participate in Youth Leadership Camp

Several Fort Bend ISD secondary school students devoted time this summer to developing their leadership skills by participating in the LEAD (Leadership Empowerment to Achieve Dreams) Youth Leadership Camp, hosted by FBISD’s Special Programs Department.

The camp was offered at four Title I campuses – Willowridge High School, and Hodges Bend, McAuliffe and Missouri City Middle Schools – to develop, train and motivate FBISD student leaders to effectively use their influence to create positive changes within themselves, as well as in their schools and communities.

Participants were selected based on recommendations from their teachers, counselors and school administrators. They will serve as leaders in the Peer Mediation Programs that will be offered at their campuses this school year.

During the camp, Title I and Check and Connect social workers representing the District’s Immigrant and Homeless programs joined staff members of First and Goal, Inc. in guiding students through a series of activities designed to help unlock their leadership potentials.

“I was truly impressed and encouraged by both the maturity and input of students at the Hodges Bend Middle School during the leadership camp,” said Walter T. Weakly of First and Goal, Inc. “Their interactions with us and participation showed us that they are ready, willing, and able to be effective leaders at their campus and in their neighborhood.”

Richard Carter of First and Goal, Inc. also spoke favorably of student leaders saying, “What stood out more than anything for me during the leadership camp was how much students at Willowridge High School love their school. Their mission is to bring pride back to Willowridge, and with the passion they have, I believe they will soar like the eagles they are.”

Students also spoke highly of the leadership camp. A Willowridge High School student commented, “I learned that being a leader takes determination, patience and being open-minded.” A Missouri City Middle School student said, “The camp leaders didn’t just tell us how to be good leaders, they showed us how to be good leaders.”
