Skeeters’ Jason Lane named Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month for July

The Sugar Land Skeeters announced Monday starting left-handed pitcher Jason Lane won the award for July pitcher of the month in the Atlantic League. Lane is the second player in Skeeters history to take home a player of the month award.
Lane’s numbers over the month of July have been exceptional.

The Santa Rosa native went (2-0) in six starts while bringing down his ERA a full two points to a staggering 2.50 mark. Impressively, Lane struck out a combined 27 batters compared to just seven walks in 36.1 innings pitched. His best outing of the season came in his first start after the 2012 All-Star Break at home against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.

The lefty threw the first complete game, three-hit shutout in franchise history joining only three other pitchers to accomplish the feat this year. Over three starts from July 14-25, Lane worked 23.0 scoreless innings, a season-high for a starting pitcher this season.

“It has been very exciting to see Jason excel as well as he has over the past two months,” Manager Gary Gaetti said. “I have known him for a very long time, but what I admire most about him is the drive he brought with him to help the team alongside improving his pitching.”

Lane made his Atlantic League debut with the Sugar Land Skeeters on June 9 against the Somerset Patriots at Constellation Field and has since contributed on both sides of the ball. The first two-way player in Skeeters history, Lane has experienced success both as a hitter and a pitcher for both Manager Gary Gaetti and Pitching Coach Britt Burns. Serving as the team’s designated hitter on days not pitching, Lane sports a .305 batting average along with hitting 8 home runs, good for 3rd on the team for both categories, and adding 26 RBI.

The former major leaguer spent a combined six years in Major League Baseball: five with the Houston Astros and one with the San Diego Padres. In 2005, Lane played in the World Series with the Astros against the Chicago White Sox as a right fielder. At the time, Manager Gaetti was the hitting coach for Houston.

At the start of the 2012 season, Lane’s primary goal was to focus on his pitching ability. Originally starting the season with Reno, Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, the left-handed pitcher was released before getting the opportunity to show his stuff.

“In Reno, they gave me a few opportunities out of the bullpen,” Lane said. “However, I feel like I got the short end of the stick, and I never felt I was able to show my best stuff in the limited amount of time I was given. That’s when I talked to Gary [Gaetti] about joining the Skeeters. I’m very glad to be apart of this exciting situation with Sugar Land in the Atlantic League.”

Jason Lane joins Jason Botts as the only two players in franchise history to take home a player or pitcher of the month award. Botts was player of the month in April/May.

The Sugar Land Skeeters return to Constellation Field Friday, August 10 as they open a six game series against the visiting Lancaster Barnstormers.
