Sugar Land Middle School, Missouri City Middle School and Garcia Middle School students and sponsors attended the Say What! Texas Tobacco Free Conference in The Woodlands, July 22-25.

Local students were sponsored by the Tobacco Free Fort Bend Coalition. Dr. Victor DeNoble, the first whistle-blower to testify before Congress about his research showing nicotine having addictive properties similar to other drugs of addiction, was one of the guest speakers. His congressional testimony was the cornerstone for sweeping changes in public policy regarding tobacco use, the national tobacco settlement and the events leading up to the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Act in 2009.

Over three hundred youth from all over Texas attended the conference to strengthen their leadership skills in tobacco control in their communities.
