Family Wellness Fair set for September 8 at George Memorial Library

Find out ways to stay healthy in spite of your hectic lifestyle at a special Family Wellness Fair on Saturday, September 8, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, at George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview in Richmond. This program is co-sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and Fort Bend County Health and Human Services.

The presentations will take place in the Meeting Room of the library. Displays will be set up in the library’s Bohachevsky Gallery with information from the Fort Bend Family Health Center, Lunches of Love, Produce for Kids, the YMCA, and much more. Representatives from the various organizations will be available from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm to answer questions, and families are encouraged to pick up information from the tables.

Beginning at 10:00 am, Pia Fontaine and Tracey Ledoux will present “Family Meals: Anytime, Anyplace.” Learn about the importance of the family meal in promoting good health, socialization, and even academic performance. Get time-saving tips for keeping meals simple but nutritious, and for eating healthy meals on the go. The co-presenters will also discuss the new portion sizes recommended by the USDA Dietary Guidelines 2010 and the website.

Ledoux is a registered dietician and assistant professor in the department of Health and Human Performance at the University of Houston. Fontaine is a nutrition student and member of the Houston Area Dietetic Association and a student member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

From 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, Melanie Manville from the Fort Bend County Health and Human Services Department will present “Family Meals: Making Easy Choices.” Manville will address the challenges of encouraging kids to eat more nutrient-rich foods. Learn how to take a few simple ingredients and create meals that are tasty and nutritious. Manville will demonstrate how to make a quick and easy meal that even the pickiest of eaters will enjoy.

Kathy Szypulski, Healthy Living Senior Director at the TW Davis YMCA, will present “Healthy Lifestyle Habits” from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Learn about ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle through nutrition, exercise, and life balance.
