Lamar CISD to start new after school program
Parents of children at four Lamar CISD elementary schools will have another option when it comes to after school care this year. The district has started the Lamar Educational Adventure Program (L.E.A.P.) to students at Austin, Hubenak, McNeill and Thomas elementary schools. The program will offer supervised activities until 6:30 p.m. on every school day, staff development day and half-days for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Students will rotate through structured enrichment activities, focusing on literacy, math, physical education, fine arts, service learning, technology and character education. Students will also receive homework help and a snack. The day will end with activities of the students choosing.
“Our goal is to offer an affordable program to parents, in an educational atmosphere they already have come to trust,” said Michelle Piña Amos, the Coordinator for L.E.A.P. “We’ll have quality activities every day in a structured setting.”
L.E.A.P. employees will undergo the same background check given to add professional educators in Texas. Employees will also have CPR certifications and first aid training. They will also participate in the district’s “Capture Kids Hearts” which is a part of Lamar CISD’s classroom management program.
The district hopes to expand L.E.A.P. to other elementary schools, add “before school care” and summer programs.
Enrollment for the first year of L.E.A.P. is ongoing and there are limited spaces available on each of the four campuses. Contact L.E.A.P. at 832-223-0132, or e-mail leap@lcisd.org.
