Pecan Grove Plantation WGA to hold golf tournament October 8
Eagles, Birdies and Pars help cure cancer
Pecan Grove Plantation WGA in Richmond will hold its 5th annual Rally for the Cure Golf Tournament on October 8, 2012. Rally for the Cure is a grassroots program that works to spread awareness about breast health and breast cancer in support of Susan G. Komen.
“Early registration is a money saver we added this year. When players register before September 15, the entry fee is only $100. This incentive allows us to keep the price the same as last year,” said Huber. Registration after September 15 will be $125.00. Golfers may register as a team or individuals for computer pairing by contacting Julie Huber, 281-785-4494.
“Most of us have a friend or family member who has had breast cancer. We can’t, individually, donate enough money to make a difference. But we can donate our time and energy to bring golf lovers, community leaders, business owners and cancer survivors together for a great cause and a good time,” commented Julie Huber, 2012 Chairperson.
Pecan Grove’s 2011 Rally tournament raised over $33,000, ranking 15th in the nation out of 4,000 events and 4th in Texas on dollars donated. “Over the past 4 years, we’ve raised $125,000. We’re proud to say that the money donated by our group supports the local Komen Foundation,” says Huber.
“We’re asking golfers to sign up and companies to donate. We want Pecan Grove WGA to be the No. 1 Texas contributor this year, so we are making a tremendous effort to double last year’s revenue and participation,” says Huber. “This is the fifth year of our tournament, but for several years before that, WGA members had an informal event to raise money for the Komen foundation. We are just carrying through with what they started.”
Lunch and dinner are included in the entry fee, along with a putting contest, team photo, prizes, and cart and greens fees. There will be hole-in-one prizes on all par 3s, the greatest prize being a new car from Finnegan Auto.
Companies and individuals are asked to donate items for the silent auction, our biggest money maker. Auctioneer Troy Nehls will work his magic with several of the higher priced auction trips and items. We know this year’s donation list will be even better; we already have something special from Jim Furyk,” reported Lynda Detman, auction chairperson. “No donation is too small. We’d love to have gift cards of any denomination and gift certificates for dining at local restaurants. Airline, hotel and bread & breakfast donations always see a lot of bidding activity.”
Adding to the total involvement of the Pecan Grove community, “our tennis group strongly supports the WGA Rally,” adds Susan Crawford and Karen Armstrong of Pecan Grove Tennis Association. “We are joining them with a super benefit tennis tournament on October 6. The pink ribbon and what it stands for has gained so much recognition that it’s easy to get members to participate.”
