Stafford Municipal School District has news to use

Did you know…

Students returned today and we officially began the 180 days of the 2012-2013 school year! Band, cheerleaders, football, volleyball, and cross-country teams have already been hard at work for several weeks. To see the athletic schedules at the district website – select the “Department” tab and “Athletics” from the links on the left side menu of the page. Open Houses are scheduled at all schools September 4-6 following the Labor Day Holiday.

Open House Dates and Times:
Primary School – Tue, Sep 4th, 6 pm
Elementary School – Wed, Sep 5th, 6 pm
Intermediate School – Wed, Sep 5th, 7:30 pm
Middle School – Thu, Sep 6th, 6 pm
High School – Thu, Sep 6th, 7:30 pm

The district’s 21st Century Before and After School program coordinator, Ms. Anitrice Austin, was awarded the Vickie Schulz Memorial Award for being a Top Site Coordinator! The announcement was made at the Annual Afterschool Centers on Education (ACE) Conference held August 7-8 in San Antonio. Congratulations Ms. Austin!

Texas Instruments (TI) hosted a New Teacher Luncheon on August 16 at the TI Facility. Teachers and their mentors were introduced and, as in the past, TI’s Hispanic Initiative Group conducted a school supply drive providing over 500 school supply items and 20 gift cards benefitting Stafford students and teachers. They even created a three-tiered cake using only school supplies. Due to the Stafford TI location closing in the near future, only 10 employees in the Hispanic Initiative Group remain at the facility. To support the school supply drive, these enthusiastic and entrepreneurial ‘10’ held multiple bake sales and raised over $600 to purchase supplies. Stafford resident and former SMSD parent Hilda Nanez has been instrumental in making this event happen each year. Thank you TI for all of your support and SMSD will miss your presence!

The Community is invited to meet our new administrators at a Meet & Greet this Thursday, August 30. The event, scheduled from 6:00 pm – 6:45 pm in the Stafford Civic Center, takes place prior to the Joint School Board and City Council Public Hearing to approve the Budget and Tax Rates.

On Saturday, September 8, from 8:30 – 11:00 am, the district will host its 6th Annual Drop-Out Recovery Walk. Community members join SMSD staff on teams to visit homes and encourage students to return to school. This year, in addition to visiting homes of students needing support to graduate high school, “walk” teams will visit the homes of students identified as residents of Stafford but not attending SMSD schools. Information about the district will be personally delivered and parents will be asked to complete a survey concerning factors that lead to school choice. To participate, please email partners@staffordmsd.org or call 281-261-9219.

“Ruckus” is a 90-minute show by Cirque Imagination that features a diverse collection of artists who inspire awe with high level acrobatics, stunning aerials, flashy juggling and colorful characters. In addition to saving $2-$10 per ticket, Cirque Imagination also will donate the same amount to the Stafford MSD Education Foundation! Additional information is below and attached.
