City of Meadows Place to hold first Neighborhood Watch meeting

By Karen Daniels

In response to citizens asking for ways to help protect their neighborhood, the City of Meadows Place Police Department will be hosting their first Neighborhood Watch meeting on Wednesday, September 19 at 7:00pm at the new Meadows Place Tactical Training Center located at 11803 S. Kirkwood. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.

Captain Jack Ashton said that “they have seen a rise in crime involving residential and commercial burglary as well as vehicle vandalism and burglary.” The first meeting will focus on what suspicious activity is and what residents can do about it. Specific tips will be given on what to look for and how to go about reporting it. Captain Ashton explained that structure and organization will come with time, and the eventual goal is to divide the City into sections and assign block captains to each section. The block leaders will then be assigned a police officer that they can contact in the event that criminal activity occurs.

Community relationships is what makes the City of Meadows Place special. Captain Ashton stressed that “it’s neighbors looking out for other neighbors that makes the difference.” If you think something looks out of place, call the police. Is the man in the tee-shirt entering backyards really with the gas company? Is the car driving slowly around the neighborhood lost or casing homes? Is the person dressed in black on a hot summer day up to something? Call the police so that they can check it out. This is what they are paid to do. Mayor Jessup says, “Police would rather come to nothing, then not come to something they should have.”

The Neighborhood Watch meeting will be the first meeting in the new Tactical Training Center. The City of Meadows Place renovated their MUD building to accommodate state mandated classes for their officers, training classes for their officers, as well as other agencies, and public education classes.
