Fort Bend resident Named Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing

By David Bates

Susan D. Ruppert

Susan D. Ruppert [ZIP 77479], Ph.D., R.N., assistant dean and chair of the Department of Acute and Continuing Care at The University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHealth) School of Nursing, will be inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) on Oct. 13 in Washington, D.C. A 2012 class of 176 of the nation’s top nurse researchers, policymakers, scholars, executives, educators and practitioners will be honored during the academy’s 39th annual meeting and conference.

“We are very proud that Dr. Ruppert will be one of eight inductees from University of Texas System institutions among this year’s fellows,” said Patricia L. Starck, D.S.N., R.N., dean of the UTHealth School of Nursing.  “Only the most distinguished nurse leaders who have made significant contributions to the field and whose careers influence health policies and better health for all are eligible to use the credentials ‘FAAN.’ These criteria certainly describe Dr. Susan Ruppert and her achievements.”

Ruppert received her Ph.D. in nursing from Texas Woman’s University. She completed a post-graduate Family Nurse Practitioner program at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and joined the UTHealth School of Nursing faculty in 1989. She was appointed as assistant dean and department chair in August 2011.

In addition to teaching and administration, Ruppert has maintained a practice as a nurse practitioner since 1996, and she currently sees patients at UT Health Services. She has considerable practice experience in adult medicine, providing primary health care to insured and underserved/uninsured populations. Her clinical background is a rare combination of both acute care and primary care specialties.

She is a fellow in the American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM) in recognition of her leadership and collaborative practice in the critical care field. She also is a fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP).  An editor and contributor to nursing textbooks, Ruppert also has published or reviewed numerous journal articles.

Ruppert serves on the board of commissioners of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and is a member of the CCNE Accreditation Review Committee. She also is the Nurse Leader for the TEXAS TEAM Gulf Coast Regional Leadership Team.
