Local non-profit holding photo contest

Brendan Shaw reigns as the 2012 September calendar winner.

Hope for Three, a Fort Bend-based nonprofit whose mission is to raise community awareness and provide assistance to families with children on the autism spectrum, is now accepting photos for the 2013 calendar “The Many Faces of Autism.” The deadline for entry is September 16. The Calendar will feature an extraordinary compilation of unique children on the autism spectrum. 100% of the funds generated from the sale of this calendar will benefit families in need of assistance to obtain treatment and services they might not otherwise afford. The official rules are available online at or by calling 800-317-0787. Autism is a growing epidemic and the leading development disability in the U.S. today. Recent statistics show one out of 88 children may be affected by autism. Studies also show that autism is three to four times more common among boys than girls. An estimated 1 out of 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States. By way of comparison, this is more children than are affected by juvenile diabetes, pediatric cancer and AIDS combined.
